How Can Backyard Chook Owners Prepare?
The best way to protect your flock is through good biosecurity. Think of it as a security system for your chickens!
1. Keep Feed and Water Clean
Wild birds can carry diseases without appearing sick.
- Store feed in sealed containers.
- Clean feeders and drinkers regularly.
- Prevent wild birds from accessing your chickens' food and water.
2. Limit Contact with Wild Birds
Wild ducks, geese, gulls, and other birds can potentially spread disease.
- Cover runs where possible.
- Avoid attracting wild birds near your coop.
- Remove standing water that may attract visiting birds.
3. Keep Your Coop Clean
A clean coop is a healthy coop!
- Remove droppings regularly.

Don't Forget Your Pets
Although uncommon, cats and dogs can become ill if they eat infected birds.
MPI recommends:
- Keeping cats indoors where possible.
- Keeping dogs on a leash around wild birds.
- Preventing pets from touching sick or dead birds.
- Contacting your vet if your pet becomes unwell after interacting with wildlife.
