PestFree: Your Most Common Questions Answered

If you’re considering a PestFree unit or already have one at home, you probably have a few questions about how it works, what it can repel, and how to keep it running smoothly year-round. Below, we’ve rounded up the most frequently asked questions to help you get the best performance from your PestFree device.

What is the detection range of the PestFree?

PestFree can sense movement up to 10 metres (33 feet) away within a 100° arc in front of the unit. When a warm body (like a pest or animal) crosses its field of view, the PestFree activates automatically.

Will PestFree work on all pests?

PestFree is designed to deter a wide range of animals including cats, dogs, rodents, rabbits, deer, and possums.
However, there are always exceptions. Animals with poor hearing or unusual hearing ranges—such as older pets or certain exotic dog and cat breeds—may not respond effectively to ultrasonic sound.

Can I use PestFree in winter?

Absolutely. PestFree works throughout winter, but keep in mind that cold weather reduces battery performance.
To ensure your unit continues to operate well:

  • Keep the lens and speaker free of snow or ice

  • Use a fresh, high-quality 9-volt alkaline battery

  • Check performance occasionally during extreme cold

Can my pet hear the PestFree from inside the house?

We’ve received no reports of this being an issue. Ultrasonic sound does not penetrate solid walls, so pets indoors should not be affected.
Sound can travel through open windows or screens, but this typically does not bother indoor animals.

Remember: PestFree is for outdoor use only.

Does PestFree work during both day and night?

Yes! PestFree protects your area 24/7.
Its internal motion sensor works whenever a warm body moves across its field of view—day or night.

How can I tell if my PestFree is working?

Here are two easy ways to check:

  1. Trigger the unit and look for the red light.

    • It should turn on for about 3 seconds

    • Then turn off

    • It resets in about 10 seconds

  2. Try the salt test

    • Turn the unit off and lay it on its back

    • Sprinkle a pinch of salt onto the speaker

    • Turn the unit back on

    • If the salt vibrates or “jumps” when triggered, your PestFree is working

If you’re unsure, try replacing the battery with a brand-new 9-volt alkaline battery straight from the pack.

Troubleshooting

My PestFree stays on once triggered

This usually means the battery is too weak to power the unit. Replace it with a fresh, good-quality alkaline 9-volt battery.

Battery testers can be misleading—they only show whether a battery has charge, not whether it can deliver enough power under load. A battery may test as “good” but still be too weak for the PestFree to operate properly.

The red light isn’t coming on

Possible causes include:

  • Flat battery

  • The PestFree is in its inactive “dead period”

  • The unit is faulty

PestFree has a built-in 20–30 second dead period after activation to conserve battery life. During this time it will not trigger again—this is a normal feature.

If the light never comes on, try a fresh battery. If the issue continues, the unit may need servicing or replacement.
